Why Are So Many Teachers Overweight

Obesity, often refereed to as the American Epidemic, is often associated with those living a lazy secondary life. Teachers on the other hand, are often though of as highly energetic dedicated people. Why is it then that we see so many over weight teachers?

Teaching is an extremely demanding profession. In addition to the school day teachers are expected to work extended hours in order to deal with parents, staff, grading, and endless planning. In short, this is a profession that requires tremendous mental energy. Unfortunately, the job does not involve much of a physical effort.

As a teacher I’ve seen this many times. Fad diets were always a hot topic in the teacher’s lounge. I’ve always been against them, but after seeing how hard teachers work, it’s easy to sympathize with the desire to find a quick fix. At the time I was young and single, and barely managed to sleep walk to the gym after school. Most of my coworkers had families to take care of, in addition to managing an entire classroom. And so with all the hard work and dedication came the extra pounds.

As a strong advocate of health I decided to develop strategies for my coworkers to get back into shape. It began on a Monday morning. Every Monday the entire teaching staff was required to come in early for a meeting, and every week one teacher was responsible for preparing breakfast. I decided to break the norm of the highly saturated potato, cheese omelets, and make a fruit smoothies. The smoothies were a hit, and while everyone sipped away I made an announcement.

“We cannot continue to sacrifice out health. Not only is it detrimental to our own state of well being it also sets a bad example for the children. Good health is not something that can be accomplished at the end of the day. It starts from the moment we wake up and continues with every breath. Let’s start simple. Instead of trying to fit 30 minuets of cardio into the evening when we’re exhausted, lets get 40 minuets throughout the course of the day”.

Everyone was a bit skeptical it being Monday morning and all, but they agreed. That morning we committed to doing short bursts of exercise throughout the day. Some of the teachers did jumping jacks with their students, while other did laps around the playground at recess. It was easy to add up to 40, and most of the teachers exceeded that number. Within weeks everyone was feeling better, and looking great.

For all the other teachers out there who might be reading this remember. The road to healthy living is long, and deeply personal. If you desire to loose weight you have to start with your daily reality. Your coworkers, your student, your family, will always be there so reach out to them. You’ll be surprised at how much support you can find within a school day.

The Lonf Road to Weight Loss

If you're reading this hopefully you are looking for some tips on how to loose weight. Before beginning you must believe the following.

1) There is NO magic pill that will help you accomplish this. Of course there are diet pills out in the market that may help you loose 1-2 pounds and have some placebo effect but you must stay away from them. They are not the answer.

2) There is NO magic diet that will help you accomplish this. Of course there is science backing those ridiculous diets that fall into the extreme category, but stay away from them. The Atkins, the Grapefruit diet, all of these should be avoided. Yes you may know people who have lost weight with them but they are not healthy. A proper diet should be filled with color and variety. Lots of fresh fruits, fresh vegetables, healthy proteins, and yes some carbs. This blog is NOT just about loosing weight. You must see the whole picture. Being healthy is not just about loosing weight. That is simply part of it.

3) You must begin to incorporate physical activity into your daily routine. This does not mean running out and signing up to a gym. Take small steps like starting with a walk every day, and work your way up to more challenging workouts.

4) You CAN NOT do this alone. If you have a family, friends, they need to be a part of it in order for it to work. If you have children for example you can not continue to serve them the same diet and expect to change yourself. You can not vow to exercises every day, if they are at home playing video games. Whatever your situation may be you need to find a way to synthesize the changes you are making with the people in your daily life. Otherwise it will not work.

5) You must take this one step at a time. Loosing weight is a long road but a worthy and exciting one. You must start with one small change at a time. The key is consistency.

6) You must ask for help. Weather you write in and ask me, your family, or your friends you need to let people know that you need help.

Stay tuned for more, when I will post a page filled with advice about how to make those first tiny changes. You will feel the difference.

Good Luck with everything!

Get Healthy Change your life!

I've been out of the country for the last 5 years and have recently returned to Indiana. Its quite a change going from worlds of healthy eating and public transportation, to Indianapolis.

Its not just the obesity that I find startling. Its the number of people that are simply overweight and unhealthy. I want to help these people. This blog is therefore going to take a new direction. Formerly about teaching, it is now going to serve to guide people who are overweight and want to change their lives. So if you happen to be reading this blog, and you are overweight please stay tuned. I plan on filling these pages with loads of advice, types and over all guidance to help you get on the right track to loosing weight, and staying healthy.

Step 1) You need to recognize the severity of your health. Weather you are obese, 20 pounds overweight, or are starting to recognize that your clothes do not fit, you must recognize this as unacceptable. Its easy to excuse your self from the condition. Maybe you plan the extra weight on a preexisting health condition, your family life, or stress. You need to recognize your condition and change. If you're reading this right now then please do the following. Stop reading, and find a clean notebook. If you don't have one then WALK to the nearest store and buy one. On the way to find the notebook think about what you're doing. There is something or many things in your life that you need fix. What are these things? Once you get home have a tall glass of water and with a nice pen write down the following declaration.

"I, state your name, and (obese, 20 pounds overweight, etc...) and I must find a way to change this". That's all you need to write. Then think about what you wrote. Let his notebook be your confidant down the long road to healthy living.

If you have actually done what I've just told you then please keep reading. I want to help people loose weight and stay healthy one step at a time. If you have questions, concerns, about anything regarding this issue, then post them to me. I will answer them. I want to help you.
